Back into the Black Hole

Back into the Black Hole

Cosmic dust is what we are,
Remnants of an ancient star,
Drifted to a distant shore,
To dance a while in sunlight,
Then slip away into the night,
Back into the black hole once more.

Welcome back to Latour Baldy, where Grant and crew return for another epic backcountry ski mission—this time with full Lūʻau spirit. With determination, grit, and a love for powder turns, these skiers push deep into North Idaho’s wild terrain to chase lines that are far beyond the reach of most. No lifts. No crowds. Just effort, friendship, and deep snow.

Sit back and enjoy the ride—this is backcountry skiing the way it’s meant to be, brought to you by those crazy enough to earn every turn.

After weeks of ice and snow in North Idaho, Dan and Steve finally had enough. We loaded up the truck and headed west to Ancient Lakes in Washington for a winter camping escape that traded deep snow for sagebrush, basalt cliffs, and misty desert waterfalls.

In true fashion, we overpacked to a nearly comical level, hauling far too much winter camping gear on a small cart into the lakes. The effort paid off. We found an idyllic campsite tucked among the sagebrush, set beneath a softly flowing waterfall, and settled in for a peaceful cold-weather camp in one of Washington’s most unique landscapes.

This trip is about slowing down, embracing the absurdity of heavy gear, and enjoying the quiet beauty of winter camping in the desert. If you love off-season adventures, minimalist mistakes, and stunning natural scenery, this one’s for you.
